The month of August is on its way out and this is the LOVE LIST, where I take note of the moments, articles, tv shows - you name it - that I loved this month, plus give you a little studio life update, because contrary to what you might have heard, joy is definitely a strategy.
I got to see my nieces in August and that was by far the highlight of the month. Being an aunt is my very favorite thing.
We had a tiny break from the crushing heat, and alot of visitors to the garden, including dragonflies, rabbits, goldfinches, hummingbirds - more hummingbirds than I’ve ever seen - and a baby raccoon.
We stayed up late every night to watch the DNC and I welcome this big energy shift with open arms. (Side note, if you’re wondering what lipstick Governor Whitmer was wearing, it was this.)
I went to Kenwick Table for coffee twice this month - it’s a treasure in our neighborhood. (If you go, get the Lavender Lincoln Latte.)
Anessa hosted a Cowgirls for Kamala event and it was so good to be in her magical space with kind people and print t-shirts with her beautiful design.
Ballerina Farm and the weird Christian Nationalist dream
The DNC Was Coachella for Nerds
Despite some extremely disappointing decisions on the part of the DNC, there were moments that genuinely moved me. One of the highlights was when the convention offered a refreshing vision of masculinity—one that felt like a much-needed departure from the worn and weathered version crafted by the RNC last month.

‘Hillbilly Elegy’ is back in the spotlight. These Appalachians write a different tale.
Chappell Roan Doesn’t Owe You Shit
This Shameless two-parter on Trisha Paytas was fascinating.
And this was fascinating in a different way.
Tracy and I were mesmerized by Woodshock. Critics didn’t like it. Online reviewers didn’t like it. We loved it. It does have one extraordinarily violent scene, but you can see it coming and look away if need be. It’s about grief - it’s haunting and heavy, but also really beautiful.
I am a hot sleeper and for the past year or so, I’ve been waking up several times throughout the night feeling like my hair is on fire. So, I got these cooling pillowcases. (That’s an affiliate link.) At first I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to use them because of the synthetic feel, but they work. They’re not necessarily cool to the touch, but they somehow keep my head from bursting into flames. 👏🏻
And that’s it for the month of August 2024.
Happy Saturday and enjoy your long weekend.
